Continued from Putting One’s Trust in Allaah and Relying on Him (Part -1 )

The people are of three kinds with regard to their trust in Allaah:

The first kind: He who refrains (desists) from working and abstains from taking the means.

This is against the Sunnah (the way) of Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) in the Universe. And this is called, تَوَاكُل ,“Tawaakul” not تَوَكُّل, “Tawakkul.”

* e.g. The student abandons studying for the exam. He says, “I will only pass if Allaah wants me to pass, if He does not want then I will not pass.”

* e.g. The sick person doesn’t take the medicine or use the Ruqya, saying, “If Allaah wants, I will be cured, if not then I will not be cured.”

Totally refraining from the means indicates a defect in the mind of the person, or indicates a shortcoming in his understanding.

The second kind: He who acts upon the means and leaves putting his trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala), like the materialistic people. Whenever one of them becomes sick, he looks for the best doctor or the best medicine, putting his trust in them rather than in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) or His words (i.e. Ruqyah). This is one kind of association of others with Allaah (Shirk), contradicting monotheism, and the person who does this is considered a sinner, having no faith in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala).

The third kind: The people of Truth, those who take the means and put their trust in Allah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala), and this is the way of the Messengers and Prophets and those who rightly follow them. This group works for Paradise, while putting their trust in Allaah. They fight in Allaah’s Cause, while putting their trust in Him, and so on.

Note: There are two matters that should be borne in mind :

1-  One should not put his trust in the means (e.g. medicine), but should depend only on Allaah. Most people feel safe and put their trust in the means (e.g. medicine) thinking that they are putting their trust in Allaah. However, when the means is removed they begin to despair. Only the people who have insight can distinguish between tawakkul on the means or on Allaah.

Abu Sulaiman ad-Darani saw a man in Makkah who did not drink or eat except Zamzam water. Days passed and he was in the same condition. Abu Sulaiman told him: “What would you drink, if the Zamzam well became deep-sunken (and had no water)?” The man got up and kissed the head of Abu Sulaiman, and said: “Jazak Allaahu Khairan for the guidance. I was (really) worshipping Zamzam for days.” Then the man left and continued on (his way).” [Salah al-Ummah Fii ’Ulow al-Himma 4/436]

How would one know if he is putting his trust in the means and not in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala)?

The sign is that, as the means is cut off, he will be sad and grieve, and start to be afraid. Here, one should know that his trust or tranquillity was towards other than Allaah.

2-  Another matter that should be borne in mind is that one should not put his trust only on unimportant matters that can be easily obtained.

E.g. directing all the Tawakkul and prayer towards a pain that can easily be removed with medicine, or hunger that can be overcome with half a slice of bread. At the same time, such a person does not direct his concern and Tawakkul towards supporting the religion, fighting the innovators, increasing faith or that which benefits the Muslims.

Not equal is the one who puts his trust in Allaah for getting a piece of bread, and the one who puts his trust in Allaah in supporting and helping the religion. The best Tawakkul is the one you put in an obligatory right, for a religious purpose and driving back a religious mischief (Bid’ah, disbelief, etc.). And this is the Tawakkul of the Prophets in establishing the religion of Allaah and driving away the mischief of the disbelievers on earth.

We are ordered to treat ourselves with medicines and this does not negate or contradict the reliance on Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala), because the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) ordered that and praised certain kinds of medicines such as the black seed and honey, and he (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) used to say:

“O slaves of Allaah treat yourselves with  medicine. Verily, Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) didn’t send down a disease except that He has sent down the cure for it, except for one disease!” They asked: “What is that?” He (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Infirm old age (or infirmities of age, decrepitude).” [Ahmed]

The scholars disputed regarding treating oneself with medicine, whether it is allowed, not allowed, compulsory or highly recommended?

Imam Ahmed is of the opinion that it is allowable and leaving it is better.

Imam Shafi’e is of the opinion  that it is highly recommended.

Imam Abu Hanifa said it is almost obligatory.

Imam Malik said taking medicine or leaving it is same.

Shaikh Ibn ’Uthaimeen (Rahimahullaah)said:

1-  If one knows that taking a medicine (or going to the doctor, doing the operation) will benefit him and if he does not take or do it, he may die, then it is obligatory to treat oneself with medicine.

2-  If one knows that taking a medicine will benefit and cure him, but if he does not take the medicine it will not cause him to die, then treating oneself with medicine is highly recommended.

3-  If taking a medicine or not taking it are both the same for him, then it is better to leave it and rely on Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala).

Ibn ’Uthaimeen (Rahimahullaah)said that Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) may put the cure in medicines which are made at home and not in the medicines made by doctors or factories.

The Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said that there are 70,000 (of his nation) that shall enter Paradise without reckoning. They are those who do not ask others to treat them with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omens, nor do they get themselves branded, but they put their trust (only) in their Lord.

Commentary:

(1) These people do not ask others to recite the Ruqya for them, but they do treat themselves with Ruqyah as the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) did for himself. They also accept it without asking, as Jibril (‘Alayhissallam) treated the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) with Ruqyah, and also ’Aisha (Radia Allaahu ‘anha)recited the Ruqyah over the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) when he became sick and he didn’t prevent her from doing that.

These believers do not ask others to recite Ruqyah for them because of their strong reliance on Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala)-they do not humiliate themselves to other than Allaah, because asking others to recite the Ruqyah is to attach the heart to other than Allaah. It may lead to misplacing one’s trust – as is common today – some are given great respect and honor for making Ruqyah on others.

Shaikhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullaah)said: “Treating with Ruqyah, whether it is done by the person himself or by others (without asking them), does not negate the Tawakkul. But what negates the Tawakkul is asking others to recite the Ruqyah for him.”

Shaikhul-Islam also said in Majmu’ al-Fatawa (1/182): “….. Ruqyah is one kind of Du’aa (invocation), and those believers do not ask that from other people. The Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) used to treat himself and others with Ruqyah, and he ordered us to do that. All the Prophets asked Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) and invoked Him, as Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) mentioned in the Qur’an about Abraham and Moses (‘Alayhissallam) and others.”

(2) These believers do not ask others to brand them (i.e. to burn parts of their bodies as a way of treatment).

(3) They do not believe in good or bad omens.  The Arabs were famous for doing Tatayyur. If a person was intending to do something or to travel, he would let a bird fly, if the bird went right then he felt good and went ahead, and if the bird flew towards the left, then he would not continue or travel. This is not allowed.

Nowadays, some people believe that if they hear a certain sound, or see a certain person, this may bring bad luck upon them. There are some people who do not get married in Shawwal, thinking that this will bring bad luck upon them. However, ’Aisha (Radia Allaahu ‘anha)said, “The Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) married me in the month of Shawwal and I was the most beloved one to him.” [Muslim]

There are people who believe that there are certain days, like Wednesdays or the month of Safar etc., that bring bad luck to them. These are all kinds of Shirk that nullify Tawakkul. The person who does not believe in all these ideas is a real Mutawakkil. Accordingly, whoever asks others to recite Ruqyah and to brand him, has missed the perfection in his Tawakkul, and will not be of these 70,000 persons who will enter Paradise without reckoning.

Question: If a person asked you if he could recite Ruqyah for you, would you lose the perfection if you did not refuse him?

Answer: No, you would not miss the perfection, because the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) didn’t stop ’Aisha (Radia Allaahu ‘anha)from making Ruqyah for him.

Examples of Tawakkul of the Prophets and the Righteous Predecessors

1.  The Prophet Muhammad (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and his Companions reached the utmost in putting their trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) and returning to Him in all their affairs. Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) praised them in His Noble Book in so many verses: in Surat Al-Imran 3:173, 174:

“Those (hypocrites) who said unto the people (i.e. believers): ‘Verily, the people (Pagans) have gathered against you (a great army). Therefore, fear them.’ But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: ‘Allaah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).’ So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allaah. No harm touched them; and they followed the good pleasure of Allaah, and Allaah is the owner of Great Bounty.”

This happened when the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) was informed that Abu Sufyan had gathered a great army after the battle of Uhud, whereupon the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل,” “Allaah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).”

2.  Narrated Ibn Abbas (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu): The last statement of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (‘Alayhissallam), when he was thrown into the fire, was: “Allaah (Alone) is sufficient for me and He is the Best Disposer (of my affairs).” [Al-Bukhari]

3.  The Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) narrated an unusual story about Bani Israel, to teach us to think good of Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala). It is reported by al-Bukhari that Abu Hurairah (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “A man from Bani Israel asked someone from Bani Israel to give him a loan of one thousand dinars and the latter gave it to him. The latter said to the former, “Bring me a witness, to witness this trust.” The man (the former) answered: “Allaah is sufficient for me as a witness.”

The (latter) man said: “Then bring me a surety.” He (the former) said: “Allaah is Sufficient for me as a Surety (Guarantor).” The man answered: “You are right,” so he (the latter) gave him the money on the condition that it be paid after a certain time. The debtor went on a voyage and fulfilled his need. Then, when the time for the payment of the debt became due, he searched for a boat to return to pay back his debt. But he did not find a boat. So he took a piece of wood and bored it and put one thousand dinars in it with a letter from him to his companion and threw it into the sea, saying: ‘O Allaah! You know that I borrowed from so and so, a thousand dinars, and he asked me a surety, but I said to him that Allaah is Sufficient for me as a Surety, so he was pleased with You and accepted You with pleasure. And he asked me a witness, and I said: “Allaah is Sufficient for me as a Witness,” so he accepted that too. Now I tried my best to find a boat to send back to him what I owe him, but I couldn’t find any. So  I entrust it to You.’ Then he threw it (the piece of wood with the letter and the money) into the sea. Then he left searching for another boat to go back to his country.

The creditor went out looking to see if maybe a boat would bring him his money. He saw the piece of wood which had the money inside it and took it to his family to be used for fire-wood. When he sawed the wood, he found the money and the letter.

Then the debtor came back to the country and went with a thousand dinars to his companion and said: ‘I strived hard to find a boat to return your money to you, but I didn’t find any.’ The creditor said: ‘Did you send something to me?’ The debtor answered: ‘I am telling you that I didn’t find a boat before this time.’ The creditor said, ‘Allaah paid on your behalf what you sent in the wood.’” [for details see the original Sahih Al-Bukhari vol. 3, Hadith No. 488, the Book of Zakat.]

4.  Narrated Anas (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) that the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites this supplication when leaving one’s house:

بِسْمِ اللّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّهِ ولا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوّةَ إِلّا بِاللّهِ

“Bismillahi Tawakkultu ’Alaa-Allahi wa laa ’Hawla wa laa Quwwata Illa Billah.”

‘(I leave my house) with the Name of Allaah, I put my trust in Allaah, there is neither power nor strength except in Allaah,’ he will get the response, ‘Your errand (mission) has been set aright, you are guarded and you are guided,’ and Satan avoids him.” [Reported by Abu Dawoud, at-Tirmidhi]

Abu Dawoud added: “Satan says to his fellow-Satans, ‘How can you harm such a man? He has been guided to the right path, his errand has been set aright for him, and he has been guarded against harm.”

5.  Narrated al-Baraa’ bin Azib (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu): “The Prophet (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) advised me, ‘When you go to sleep at night you should pray:

“O Allah! I have submitted myself to You and have faced my face to You, and I am under Your command (i.e. depend upon You in all my affairs) and  put my trust in You, expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is no fleeing from You and no refuge but with You. I believe in the Book (i.e. Qur’an) You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) You have sent.”

Allaah’s Messenger (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites these words (before going to bed) and dies the same night, will die on al-Fitrah [the Islamic religion (as a Muslim).]’” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

 6.       The Tawakkul of Prophet Ya’qoub (Jacob) (‘Alayhissallam).

Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) gives us the example of Prophet Ya’qoub and his strong trust in Allaah. Prophet Ya’qoub had very handsome children. He sent his children to Egypt and instructed them to enter Egypt by different gates because he feared the evil eye for them. He said: “O my sons! Do not enter through one gate, but enter through different gates….” After instructing them, he (‘Alayhissallam) said: “… I cannot avail you against Allaah. The decision rests only with Allaah. I put my trust in Him alone, and all who trust should only trust Him.”  Surat Yusuf 12:67

That means: this precaution will not prevent Allaah’s Decision and appointed Decree, but I (Yacoub) trust in Allaah that whatever He chooses will be the best.

Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) says in Surat at-Tawbah:

“Say: ‘Nothing ever happens to us, except what Allaah has ordained for us. He is our Helper and Protector. And in Allah let the believers put their trust.’” 9:51

7.  The Tawakkul of Umm Ishmael (the mother Prophet Isma’il).

It is reported by al-Bukhari (Rahimahullaah)that Ibn Abbas (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) narrated: “Ibrahim (‘Alayhissallam) (Abraham) brought the mother of Isma’il and her son, while she used to nurse him at her breast, to a place near the Ka’bah under a tree on the place of Zam-zam, at the highest place in the mosque. During those days, there was nobody in Makkah nor was there any water. So he made them sit over there and placed near  them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward. Isma’il’s mother followed him saying; “O Ibrahim (Abraham)! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything (to enjoy)?” She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her. Then she asked him, “Has Allaah ordered you to do so?” He said, “Yes.” She said, “Then He will not neglect us,” and returned while Ibrahim (Abraham) proceeded onwards. And she said to Gabriel (‘Alayhissallam) when he asked her: “Who are you?”, “I am Hajar,” or “Umm Walad Ibrahim,” i.e. the mother of son of Ibrahim. Gabriel (‘Alayhissallam) said: “To whom has he left you?” She said: “To Allaah.” Gabriel (‘Alayhissallam) said, “He has left you to the One Who Suffices.”

8.  The Tawakkul of Abu Bakr as-Siddique (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu).

The Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) asked Abu Bakr (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu): “What did you leave for your family?” [When he gave all his money in charity]. He answered: “I left for them Allaah and His Messenger.” [Al-Bukhari]

9.  Once ’Umar ibn al-Khattab (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) met some people from Yemen and asked them: “Who are you?” They said: “We are al-Mutawakkilun, the ones who put their trust in Allaah.” ’Umar said: “Nay! But you are the Muttakilun who rely on the means, not on Allah; the Mutawakkil  is the one who puts the seeds in the earth and then he puts his trust in Allah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala).” [At-Tawakkul by Ibn Abi Ad-Dunia and its chain is Sahih]

10.  Aamir ibn Abd Qais (Rahimahullaah)said: “Three verses in Allah’s Book suffice me from all the creation:

The first verse in Surat Yunus:

وَإِن يَمْسَسْكَ اللّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلاَ كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَإِن يُرِدْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَلاَ رَآدَّ لِفَضْلِهِ يُصَيبُ بِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

“And if Allaah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His favor which He causes to reach whomsoever of His slaves He wills.” 10:107

The second verse is in Surat Hud:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِي الأَرْضِ إِلاَّ عَلَى اللّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا كُلٌّ فِي كِتَابٍ مُّبِينٍ

“And no (moving) living creature is there on earth but its provision is due from Allaah. And He knows its dwelling place and its deposit (in the uterus, grave, etc.), all is in a clear Book.” 11:6

The third verse is in Surat Fatir:

مَا يَفْتَحِ اللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ مِن رَّحْمَةٍ فَلَا مُمْسِكَ لَهَا وَمَا يُمْسِكْ فَلَا مُرْسِلَ لَهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

“Whatever of Mercy (i.e. of good), Allaah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” 35:2 [Al-Jamie’ Lishu’ab al-Iman]

11.     Shaqiq al-Balkhi (Rahimahullaah)said: “For everyone there is a state: there is the one who relies on his wealth, another who relies on himself, another one who puts his trust in his tongue, another in his sword or kingdom, and there is one who relies on and puts his trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala), and whoever does that, he will find the rest and Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) will raise him in rank (upgrade him). Then he added,

“وتوكّل على الحيّ الذي لا يموت ……..”

“And put your trust in the Ever-Living One Who dies not.” [Al-Furqan 25:58]

“Whoever puts his trust in other than Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala), it is about to cut off with him and fall into distress and misery.” [Al-Jamie’ Lishu’ab al-Iman]

12.     A wise man said: “At-Tawakkul is of three ranks:

The first is leaving the complaint. The second is satisfaction, and the third is love. To leave the complaint is a degree of patience, satisfaction is the calmness of the heart towards what Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) has decreed, and love is to love what Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) has decreed for him. The first degree is for the ascetics, the second degree for the truthful ones and the third degree is for the Messengers.” [At-Tawakkul by Ibn Abi Ad-Dunia]

13.     Putting one’s trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) is the heart of Tawakkul. The best example of putting  one’s trust in Allaah is the mother of Moses (‘Alayhissallam):

Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) said in Surat al-Qasas:

وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى أُمِّ مُوسَى أَنْ أَرْضِعِيهِ فَإِذَا خِفْتِ عَلَيْهِ فَأَلْقِيهِ فِي الْيَمِّ وَلَا تَخَافِي وَلَا تَحْزَنِي إِنَّا رَادُّوهُ إِلَيْكِ وَجَاعِلُوهُ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

“And We inspired the mother of Moses, (saying): ‘Suckle him (Moses), but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.’” 28:7

Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Her action indicates her trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala). Had her complete trust not been in her Lord, she would not have thrown her own beloved son in the river to be taken to where only Allaah Knows.

The Tabut (the box or the case that Moses was put in) reached Pharaoh’s castle. Asiyah (Pharaoh’s wife) looked at Moses and Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) endued him (Moses) with love from Him into the heart of Asiyah. Pharaoh executed the request of his wife Asiyah and took him to raise him in his castle, when she said:

قُرَّتُ عَيْنٍ لِّي وَلَكَ لَا تَقْتُلُوهُ عَسَى أَن يَنفَعَنَا أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُ وَلَداً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ(9

“A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Kill him not, perhaps he may be of benefit to us, or we may adopt him as a son.” And they perceived not (the result of that).”

“And the heart of the mother of Moses became empty (from every thought except the thought of Moses). She was very near to disclosing (his case, i.e. the child is her son), had We not strengthened her heart (with faith), so that she might remain as one of the believers.” Al-Qasas 28:9-10

Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) had forbidden (other) foster mothers for him, in order to let his own mother suckle him. Look at the recompense of putting one’s trust in Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala)! Before she suckled him with fear of Pharaoh, now she suckled him with an order from Pharaoh! So Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) returned Moses to her and made Moses a Prophet as a gift (Bounty) from Allaah (subhanaahu wa Ta’aala).” [Madarij al-Salikeen 2/143]

Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his Companions.
