Question: Is it permissible to draw on the faces of children, that which has become widespread in entertainment places and so forth?
The drawings are usually either images of animals, hearts, etc.

Shaikh ‘Abdullaah ibn Muhammad at-Tayyar (Hafidhahullaah) answered: “There are two types of drawing: First: Drawing pictures of animate beings (which have souls)

The Shari’ah (Islamic Law) forbids that based on the statement of Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “Every image-maker will be in the Fire.” [Reported by Muslim]

And he (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) also said: “The most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers; those who tried to imitate the creation of Allaah.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Accordingly, it is forbidden to draw images of humans, animals and/ or birds.

Second: Drawing pictures of inanimate objects, such as mountains, trees, hearts, balls, planes, cars and the like. There is no sin in that according to the scholars.

Based on the aforementioned discussion, it is not permissible to draw pictures of animate beings on the faces of children according to the stern (severe) threat in the texts which warn against image making. It is better to entertain children and bring joy to their hearts without violating any legal rulings.” [End quote- Fatwa no. 3614]

Shaikh Sulayman ar-Ruhaili (Hafidhahullaah) was asked a similar question and he said: “If drawing is with colors that can easily be removed, unlike tattoos which remain, and it is not a drawing of animate beings, and there is no resemblance to the disbelievers or disobedient ones, then it is permissible. However, if any of the conditions that we mentioned is not fulfilled, then it is not permissible.”

Other scholars added another condition for the permissibility of drawing on the faces of children, which is to avoid using colors that harm the skin of their faces.

Generally speaking, if the drawing is void of all the prohibitions, then it is permissible.

What is the ruling on using the Snapchat filters which alter the shape, size of the face, eyes, etc.?

All the scholars are in consensus that this is impermissible. It is considered a kind of changing the nature created by Allaah.

Shaikh Al-Fawzan (Hafidhahullaah) said: “This is from the plot of Shaytaan, who threatened and promised when Allaah cursed him; he said:

وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ

And indeed, I will order them to change the nature created by Allaah.”

[Surat An-Nisaa’ (4:119)]
